Torquay United have inched ahead of their points-tally of last season, when their final total of 89 points saw them pipped for the National League South championship by Truro City on goal-difference.

Heading into last night’s rearranged game at Dover Athletic, Paul Wotton’s Gulls had taken 53 points from 28 games.

That’s one more than they had at the same stage 12 months ago, and it’s come on the back of a run of W9 D2 L2.

This time in 2025 United also suffered back-to-back defeats in games 28 and 29, to Hampton & Richmond Borough (H) and Maidstone United (A), before another strong run (W11 D4 L2) which carried them through to the end of the season.

We’re not into ‘run-in’ territory yet, although the games do come thick and fast through February, but the next half-dozen fixtures of United and their promotion rivals are bound to prompt some ups and downs, especially in an ever unpredictable division.

After Dover away last night, Torquay entertain Dorking Wanderers on Saturday, then Chippenham (A), Maidenhead (H), Eastbourne Borough (A) and Worthing (A).

As well as their visit to Plainmoor this weekend, Dorking meet Hornchurch (H) and Maidstone (A) later in the month.

Hornchurch’s upcoming schedule includes local rivals Chelmsford (H), Dorking (A) and Worthing (H).

A really consistent run now from any of the leading teams would put all the others under increasing pressure.
