No Bull from the Huss taking rock marks in Torbay waters

The changing seasons bring new opportunities for South Devon anglers

Last month Bull Huss featured heavily in sea anglers catches, even giving us the fish of the month. This month has started with them again, Newton Abbot’s Tristan Rowe fishing a rock mark in Torbay.

Tristan landed a fi e fish of 10lbs 2oz fish on a short pulley rig baited with a Sardine and Squid wrap with the bait coming from his own company, Newton Baits.

Bull Huss also feature strongly in the results from two of Paignton Sea Anglers’ recent competitions. Mike Adkins took second spot in a boat competition with a Bull Huss of 122.16%, specimen beaten by the smallest margin by Mike Fuller with a Cuckoo Wrasse of 122.5%.

Mike Adkins was more successful in the shore competition, where he took top with yet another Bull Huss, this one tipping the scales at 80.73% and was caught from the shore at Budleigh Salterton, in second spot was Mark Stevenson with a Dogfish of 63.10%.

Elsewhere around the coast, Mackerel are still putting in the odd appearance, as are a few early Whiting. Hopefully they will encourage the Bass to stay around and give anglers a chance of a really big fish.

Sonny Blackwell fished a rock mark and found small Conger Eels and Dogfish eager to take his baits, giving him sport for the whole session.

Brixham SAC member Jason Upham travelled to Plymouth and was more than happy with a Couches Bream weighing in at 1lb 2oz, this could be the last Couches recorded before winter hits us.

A recent regular in this column is Chris Hawkes, who, like me, enjoys all forms of angling and this week fished the River Plym, landing a Flounder of 2lbs 2oz and then later in the week fished Newton Abbot’s Decoy Lake.

This is a lake not often mentioned in angling circles but for the price of a day ticket can at times produce some good fish, although at other times it can be a hard venue in which to find and catch.

He worked hard all day, changing positions around the lake several times but was eventually rewarded with a Pike, which at 8lbs may have been a little smaller than he was hoping for, but a fish none the less.

My own fishing of late has been a little slow with nothing much to report but hopefully this weekend with good weather I will be out of Eastbourne, Sussex fishing aboard Deep Blue Charters.

The boat was run for a few years at Minehead by Michael-Webber Griffiths under the name Teddie Boy and I spent many happy hours aboard her catching some wonderful fish. I hope being aboard her again will bring some of that luck back.
