Marshals lining up Allan Sydenham on the start line during the recent Five Clubs event
Motorsport relies very heavily on volunteers at every level – and the most important group of volunteers are the marshals. There would be no motorsport events without them – they are the lifeblood of the sport.
The marshals ensure that every event runs smoothly, and in the event of an incident, they will be the first people to reach the scene and assess the situation.
This may involve returning the car to the track, assisting with the recovery of a damaged vehicle, or helping the medical team with an injured driver. An experienced marshal will possess many skills.
For any motorsport fan, you will also have the best seat in the house to view all the on-track action. Because quick reactions are vital, marshals are posted close to the track.
The South West motor clubs organise a wide variety of events, including speed hillclimbs, sprints, autocross, rallies and auto tests – all require marshals. Some marshals also attend major national and international events like the British Grand Prix, Goodwood Festival of Speed and Le Mans.
No experience is necessary – all training is provided by the motor clubs and the British Motorsports Marshals Club (BMMC) - the largest marshalling organisation in the world, founded in 1957.
Most motor clubs will provide a free lunch at many events and may even agree to cover some travelling expenses.
If you have an interest in motorsport, however, you do not want to compete, then volunteering for marshaling duties will be your passport to joining other motorsport enthusiasts. The racing community is very friendly, and everyone is welcome.
