Former Torquay United manager Gary Johnson has resigned as director of football at League Two strugglers Cheltenham Town.

Johnson, 69, leaves Whaddon Road 16 months after joining the Robins, which followed his resignation at Plainmoor four months earlier in February 2024.

He had previously managed Town from 2015-2018, leading them back to the Football League, before more than five years at Plainmoor, including winning the NLS title in 2019 and reaching the NL Premier Play-Off Final in 2021.

Cheltenham, under manager Mike Flynn and Johnson, had a major squad overhaul in the summer, but they are currently bottom of League Two with one win from eight games.

Johnson’s decision to step down also comes after Cheltenham’s recent takeover by former Burnley chairman Mike Garlick.
