Brixham SAC held the third of their summer evening open competitions at Brixham Breakwater last Wednesday with the winner being Brixham’s own Jason Upham.

Jason took the top prize with a Mackerel of 1lb 2oz, he also had a couple bonus bass in his catch. Second spot went to Adam Distin with another Mackerel of 13oz and third place and top junior was Will Rees with a Mackerel of 12oz.

The last of these competitions is on Wednesday, August 27, all proceeds of the evening are given to the RNLI and there is a huge prize table given by kind sponsors Brixham Bait and Tackle.

This is a great fun event to fish, running from 7pm to 9pm with the sign-on at the start of the breakwater from 6.30pm. Entry is just £2 with Juniors £1. I hope to see many of you there.

The other big competition, The Torbay Fishing Festival starts at 7.30pm on Friday, August 29 until 7.30pm on Sunday, September 7. Entry is £50 for all days or £8 daily. Juniors are cheaper. Jason Upham features yet again with a new Brixham SAC record shore caught Cuckoo Wrasse of 1lb 2oz, caught from the Breakwater on an early morning session.

Boats fishing the wrecks are still finding Pollack and Bass with John Bovey landing a couple of good-sized Bass this week. Tuna are now being caught from the boats out of the Bay and many anglers will be out trying to hook a fish of a lifetime with these hard fighting sportfish.

Spring ponds latest open competition saw Shane Harper taking the honours with a bag weight of 79lbs 8oz of Carp, all were caught on a 16m pole and fishing shallow with pellets, second was Joe Jaques with 68lbs15oz using the same tactics and third was Jason Fay using worms.

Newton Abbot FA waters are fishing superbly with the latest round of the Wednesday evening sweepstake producing another good winning weight of 70lbs for Sam Powell, Tom Rangecroft took second place with 34lbs.

Chris Hawkes took his 7yo son Dexter fishing for the first time on one of the Rackerhayes complex ponds and had a brilliant day, catching his first Carp a mirror of 16lbs 2oz and then topping it with a common of 24lbs.

Surely this must be an early contender for our fish of the month competition kindly sponsored by Newbarn Farm Angling Centre and Sidewinder lures. If you have something that you think will beat it, please email a picture and catch details to njohnsherlockfish@gmail.com
