Fishermen edge past Wells on penalties
Brixham will face Portishead Town in the final of the Les Phillips Cup after holding their nerve to win at tense semi-final at Wells City.
It will be a huge task for the Fishermen, taking on the runaway leaders in the Western League, but Brixham have already demonstrated this season that they can be a match for any team.
“It was a really tight anxious game for both sides on an extremely bobbly and hardened pitch,” said Brixham joint-manager Tim Porter.
“In fairness to our lads, it felt like we were on the receiving end of some questionable decisions, but instead of allowing it to upset us, the lads, to their credit, used it to fuel their own fires to ensure the main aim of reaching the final was achieved.
“We told them prior to the game to think selfishly. Cup finals don't come around often and if you look locally, there isn't anyone else in any showpiece event to shout or scream about. That desire to get into a final certainly came through at the end
“The lads who stepped up to take the penalties deserve a huge amount of credit, as of course does Marko Radovanovic, who saved two of the Wells penalties.
“Regardless now of the final outcome, a showpiece day out for the club in only our second season at this level is something to be really proud of.”
In the Western League, Buckland Athletic suffered a bump in the road for their play-off aspirations after a 2-0 defeat at Barnstaple Town. There was also a rare loss for Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police in the South-West Peninsula League, going down 3-1 at home to Bridport.
