Top teams stretching away in table tennis

NA Buzzards lead the first division by ten points from Brixham Sharks in runner-up spot following the latest round of matches in the South Devon Table Tennis League.

Sonja Ryland and Kevin Nicholls were unbeaten as the Buzzards beat the Brixham Trawlers 9-1. Martin Sharp, stepping up from the second division for the Trawlers, prevented the whitewash with a fine victory over Jane Hatton.

Meanwhile, Brixham Sharks saw off NA Condors by the same 9-1 scoreline with maximums from Clive Banham and Chris Harper.

Another excellent 9-1 win for Grove Guerrillas has opened up an incredible 21-point lead at the top of the second division table. Maximums from David Pearson and Andrew Gilhespy in their 9-1 win over Dawlish Aces helping the Guerrillas to a formidable position with just seven matches to go.

NA Ravens in second place drew with Halwell B, third, in a see-saw match, Halwell taking a 3-0 lead but then going behind as the Ravens fought back. A share of the points was probably right with half of the sets going to a fifth game.

Just three points separate the four clubs vying for the runners-up position behind the Guerrillas. Despite an excellent maximum from reserve Matt Laws, Torbay Academy 2 lost 7-3 at Newton Abbot against the Falcons.

A Chris Garner maximum helped his Torre Vikings team to a 7-3 victory over Torbay Academy 3, which saw them hit the top of the table in the only third division match played this week.

Torre Spartans have an eight-point lead at the top of the fourth division following their 7-3 victory over NA Ospreys, Lewis Lavery and Robert Excell were unbeaten for the Spartans. A Phil Jewell maximum wasn’t enough for Torbay Academy 7 as they were beaten 6-4 by Dawlish Delinquents.

The Academy 6 side fared better, defeating Brixham Seals 8-2 thanks to maximums from Aleksandra Treder and Gustaw Adamczak.
