Torquay United boss Paul Wotton has secured the services of Mike Edwards as his assistant manager.

Edwards worked with Wotton as performance coach at Truro City and he arrives at Plainmoor with a wealth of Football League experience, having amassed over 550 appearances for Hull City, Grimsby, Carlisle and Notts County.

The two men have a major rebuild job on their hands over the next couple of months, as they look to construct a new squad capable of mounting a sustained challenge in the National League South, which restarts in August.

Wotton said: “I know Mikey very well, having played against him many times during my playing career and worked with him in my time at Truro City.

“He’s somebody I trust and respect, and I’m really glad he is on board.

“He is very calm and logical, whereas I can be a bit louder and a bit more forceful, so we balance each other very well. We had a season in the league last year, so we know quite a bit about it.”

Edwards added: “We know it is a rebuilding process, which is great,” said Mike.

“It isn’t the first time we have been at this rebuilding stage, we were both massively hard workers on the pitch, and that’s what we want from the players as well.

“The team will give everything it can out on the pitch, and that has to be the standard and the work ethic. It is great to be at something that is fresh and new, because we know what we want from performances and how we want to act on the pitch.

“It is great to be part of everything around the club, and hopefully we can generate those good times again.”
