Torquay triumph in Coastal Rowing League
Torquay Rowing Club hosted the fourth regatta of the Coastal Rowing League, staging the Thatcher Rock Offshore Race over a 6km course from Haldon Pier to Thatcher Rock and back. Torquay offered the full range of coastal rowing events to clubs attending from all along the south coast.
Conditions were ideal for the coastal boats with a nice chop on the water whipped up by the south-easterly breeze, into which crews rowed but which provided assistance on the return from Thatcher Rock.
There were some excellent results for Torquay Rowing Club with Rus Bammens and Ian Wilson winning the Men’s over 60 double sculls category; Jane Nicholls and Barbara Mears winning the Women’s over 50 double sculls category; and Barbara Mears winning the women’s over 60 single sculls category.
Torquay Rowing Club also boated a novice crew for their first ever competitive race. The crew of Susie Payne, Sally Baxter, Alex James, Vensan Crushcov and cox Ian Wilson didn’t disgrace themselves with a worthy third place in the Novice coxed quadruple sculls.
The nine regatta Coastal Rowing League now has a mid-season break before recommencing with the next League event at the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta on August 24.
