Powerboat spectacular in Torbay for May Bank Holiday

Torquay will be hosting the opening round. round 1 of the ‘Aqua Adrenaline Tour’ this Bank Holiday weekend, May 3-5, Ran by the UK’s Offshore Circuit Racing Drivers Association (OCRDA).

With seven local teams, this opening round is set to be intense, as all teams like to win on home territory. Malc Dopson from Paignton is the current National champion and he will be hoping to maintain his position. Also racing is John Watson, who is the owners of Torquay’s Trinity House Church.

Aqua Adrenaline is the UK’s most popular offshore powerboat racing series, which travels to venues all over the UK with seven race weekends – each weekend comprising of four races. A fleet of 20 boats and 16 jet ski racers will begin their first battle of the season at 11.15 and Sunday at 12.45 close to the Breakwater, meaning great viewing for spectators.

These exciting-to-watch circuit racing boats compete in three Classes based on engine capacity. The boats reach speeds of up to 75mph and the racing is tight and close with drivers going head-to-head and the navigators needing all-round vision to make sure they abide by rules and keep their team-mate and other teams out of the perils of close racing.

The jet ski racing is always exciting to watch. A fleet of 16 ski’s in three Classes will be competing in four races on a slightly shorter course than that used by the boats. For spectators, there will be excellent viewing along the breakwater.
