Paignton RFC enjoying superb season
Cherries level on points with leaders Tiverton
It all comes down to one final weekend to decide the destination of the league title in the Counties 1 Tribute Western West Division.
Paignton Rugby Club delivered yet another superb performance in their highly impressive campaign to win 46-26 at Bude on Saturday, a result that moved the Cherries level on points with leaders Tiverton with just one game left to play.
Paignton have the tougher challenge on Saturday, as they host a dangerous Plymstock Albion Oaks, who currently sit third in the table, although Tiverton will also have their work cut out at home to fifth-placed Penryn.
Whatever happens at Queen’s Park and in Tiverton on Saturday, the Cherries can be extremely proud of their season at all levels of the club, and the future is looking even brighter following a crowdfunding campaign that has raised over £20,000 for new changing rooms with showers, a first aid room and a multi-function indoor space.
Paignton Director of Rugby Richard Hunt explained the importance of this new project: “We have 450 playing members and an additional 150 social members, placing our club in the heart of the community.
“Over the last few years, we have added more and more junior teams, as well as launching a senior ladies’ team.
“Our growth as a club has created some challenges, including changing room space. On a Sunday, we can have four games being played on one pitch and with just two changing rooms to accommodate players. This new project will improve the match-day experience for everyone.”
Brixham RFC U21s have won the Reg Brewer Cup after fighting back to defeat their Torquay counterparts 17-7 in the second leg at Astley Park. Brixham overturned an eight-point deficit from the first leg to secure the trophy and another superb advert for youth rugby in the Bay.
