Paignton and Brixham rowers excel in Dart Regatta

The Dart Gig Club Regatta held on the River Dart at Dartmouth attracted ten local pilot gig clubs for thirteen events.

Racing was mostly over a 3,000 metre course in the mouth of the Dart, although the Masters, Mixed and Under 16 were over 2,000 metres and the Under 14 over a 1,000 metres.

The event proved extremely useful as preparation for the World Pilot Gig Championships scheduled for May 3 - 5, 2024, on the Isles of Scilly. Dart excelled on their home waters winning seven of the events.

Paignton’s contingent with their gig ‘Top Catch’ competed in five events with some gusto and achieved third place in the strongly contested Ladies A race.

Brixham with their gig ‘Pegasus’ were also strong competitors in all thirteen events on offer. In the Men’s races, they took second place in both the Men’s B and the Men’s Supervets. In the ladies’ events they were second in the Ladies Masters.

The Brixham Under 16 crew were in second place coming into the home strait with just 100 metres to go. Some real effort saw them overtake Dart to win by just two feet.
