Gulls welcome Weston after Yeovil defeat

Torquay United face their penultimate home game of the season on Easter Monday and an immediate challenge to ‘move on’ from the Good Friday loss at champions elect Yeovil Town.

After falling behind to a goal from Jahmari Clarke shortly before half-time, United succumbed to a 3-0 defeat in the second period, as the Glovers took one more big step toward promotion.

The Gulls are facing a very different fight, as the ownership crisis off the pitch is matched by a scrap against relegation on it. Although four points clear of the drop zone, United probably still need at least a couple of wins from their final six games, starting with the visit from Weston-super-Mare tomorrow.

“It's not what we anticipated but Yeovil are a good side and have the best record in the division at home,” said interim boss Aaron Downes. “They will be worthy winners [of the league].

“Until the goal, we felt comfortable. We didn’t have the ball as much as we would have liked but we knew we would have to be structurally sound. There was an element of luck to the goal, we get a block on the ball and it drops to their player.

“It was an uphill battle but we have a couple of breakaways in the first half. We weren’t clinical enough and didn’t have that cutting edge. Generally, we were quite happy with our shape in the first half but the second goal kills us.

“We can definitely manage moments a lot better and we could deal with the goals a lot better, but I’ve spoken to the players and the staff because we have to move on. There is nothing we can do about it now, get rid of the disappointment because Monday is really important to us.

“Another massive thank-you to our supporters, who came in their droves. We’re frustrated we couldn’t give them something to cheer but we move on quickly from Yeovil.

“We will go into Monday refreshed, energised, enthusiastic and ready to put in a really good performance in front of a good crowd.”
