Colts stepping up for Brixham
Victories for Torquay, Brixham and Paignton Rugby
Torquay Athletic RFC battled to a brave 11-10 victory at Devonport Services 2nds to move within seven points of leaders Barnstaple 2nds in the Counties 2 Tribute Devon League on Saturday.
The game was locked at a rare 0-0 at half-time and remained close to the end, with the Tics narrowly scraping to a one-point victory.
Tics head coach Dan Williams said: “We spoke at half-time that we were very much the second-best team and that’s a credit to Services. Fair play to our boys, we bounced back and managed to grind out a win against quality opposition.
“It puts us back into second position and something we spoke about as a minimum requirement this year.”
The game marked a special occasion for Ash Sharp, who celebrated his 100th appearance for the TICS.
A much-changed Brixham team secured an excellent 21-10 victory at struggling Matson in the Regional 1 SW Division. Rory Medley scored a try on his first-team debut and a Brixham side that comprised an incredible eight players under the age of 21.
An impressive six Brixham Colts turned out for the Crusaders in a narrow 8-5 defeat to the Old Technicians.
The first-team turn their attention to the visit of Okehampton in a League and Senior Cup double this weekend. A win for the Fishermen will give them their highest points total in the league.
Paignton are third in the Western West Division and just five points behind leaders Tiverton following an efficient 29-10 victory at St Ives. The tries came from Josh Gillard, Franco Van Rooyen (2), Jordan Hodge and Jack Carlisle. Brad Mckee kicked the extras.
Paignton 2nds trounced 50-3 and a top weekend for the club was completed by Paignton Ladies turning on the attacking style with a superb 59-5 victory at Camborne.
