Williamson, 39, who was born in Stoke-on-Trent but grew up in Paignton, is the latest man to try and turn round the Dons, who  were relegated last season and recently sacked Graham Alexander after only 16 games. He has been lured South after four years that he has spent at Gateshead where he won the National League North title, took the Heed to last season’s FA Trophy Final & leaves them sixth in the NL Premier.

Williamson, who is taking coaching duo Ian Watson and Chris Bell with him from Tyneside to Buckinghamshire as part of his coaching team, made more than 500 appearances as a centre-half in every division of English senior football. After graduating as a trainee at Plainmoor, he was sold to Southampton for £100,000 in 2001 and went on to play for the Saints, Wycombe Wanderers, Watford, Newcastle United, Wolves, Oxford United and Gateshead respectively.
