Nostalgia: 'Medieval gem' set to reopen to public

Kirkham House

Kirkham House in Paignton will be open to the public from 1pm to 4pm on Friday 18 and Monday 21 April.

This medieval gem, situated on Kirkham Street, has many original features and is well worth a visit. The house is owned and managed by English Heritage, and the open days are provided by Paignton Heritage Society. Guided tours are available, followed by a visit to the Clink (Paignton’s first prison) and a trip up the Bishop’s (Coverdale) tower. Entry is free; donations are always appreciated.

PHS has secured a lease on a room in Paignton Library and is setting up a heritage centre open to the public where it will be possible to see items from the extensive archive. The centre is due to open after Easter.

The Society is growing, and for the first time it was agreed at the AGM to open up membership to under 18s. Discussions are underway, and it is hoped that ways will be found to involve our younger members in the society’s activities.

The monthly meetings of PHS are held on the third Thursday of every month (excluding July and August) at Gerston Chapel on Torquay Road starting at 7pm. This month’s speaker on 17 April is Richard Farrow, who will be talking about the history of Coniston House and Simla.

Tea and coffee are provided. Everyone is welcome. Members: £4; non-members: £5. Membership of the society costs £10 annually.
