A teenage-led social enterprise is making waves across Devon by turning climate anxiety into meaningful action.
Roots Media was founded in 2024 by students at Churston Ferrers Grammar School in Brixham, with a mission to inspire, educate and empower young people to take the lead on environmental issues.
The organisation was co-founded by 16-year-old Lucas Brendon, alongside Matt McEwen and Fyn Nadin, after the group became increasingly concerned about the impact of climate change on their generation.
What began as a Business Studies classroom project has since grown into a multi-faceted platform combining media, fashion and grassroots activism. At the heart of the initiative is a clothing brand which donates 100 per cent of its profits to local environmental projects across Devon.
So far, the group has raised more than £3,000, supporting initiatives focused on sustainability, conservation and youth engagement.
Lucas, who is now Director and Head of Media at Roots Media, said the project was born out of a desire to turn frustration into something positive.
He said: “We were seeing a lot of climate anxiety among young people, but not many opportunities to actually do something about it. Roots was about creating a platform where young people feel empowered to take action now, not in the future.”
Alongside its clothing line, Roots Media produces creative content and runs a podcast, Turning the Tide, which highlights grassroots leaders and changemakers. Guests have included Riverford founder Guy Watson and marine biologist Dr Imogen Napper.
Lucas has also represented youth perspectives on a range of issues including social enterprise, climate change and masculinity, appearing on panels, podcasts and local radio. He was recently interviewed on Radio Exe alongside criminal psychologist Julia Shaw to discuss environmental crime and water pollution.
Through its work, Roots Media aims to amplify youth voices and encourage sustainable leadership, while building a network of young people committed to protecting the environment.
As the organisation continues to grow, its founders hope to expand their reach and inspire more young people across Devon to take part in shaping a more sustainable future.
