South Hams District Council has reopened Torcross Tank Car Park and the public toilets there, just in time for the half-term school holidays.
Over recent weeks, council teams have been supporting residents and local businesses following the winter storms, including assisting with waste removal, clearing storm debris, street cleansing, and repairing and deep cleaning the facilities at the car park.
Councillor Julian Brazil, South Hams District Council's Lead Member for Community Services and Operations, said: “It has taken a huge amount of hard work to get the Torcross Tank Car Park open in time for half term.
“The hard work and collaboration between South Hams District Council, Devon County Council and their contractor Landmarc have led to the car park and access to the South West Coast Path opening again quickly after such terrible damage.
"I’d like to thank everyone involved for pulling together in such a fantastic team effort, and thank you to the local community for their patience while we carried out the essential works needed to get these facilities reopened.”
Cllr Dan Thomas, Leader of South Hams District Council and Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, added: “The response to the situation at Torcross has been swift, and this has been crucial to ensure that all the agencies involved can support local people throughout this situation.
“Now the car park is reopened, I encourage people to support businesses in the area throughout half-term and the weeks beyond, to help them through this difficult period.”
Caroline Voaden, MP for South Devon, said: “I would like to offer my thanks to everyone who has worked so hard to get the car park in Torcross open in time for half term.
“It’s been a fantastic team effort and I hope visitors come to the area and show their support for local businesses.”
While the car park and toilets are open, some areas remain affected by storm damage, such as the green at Beesands. Members of the public are asked to stay away from these areas and avoid climbing over rock barriers.
