Torquay Facebook Marketplace scammer leaves sellers £1,600 out of pocket

Police are appealing for help identifying a man in connection with a mobile phone theft scam in Torbay and Cranbrook.

Two phones, each valued at around £800, were fraudulently taken from sellers who had listed them on Facebook Marketplace.

The suspect visited the victims’ homes under the pretense of buying the phones and asked them to enter their bank details on his device.

He showed a screenshot of a bank transfer confirmation, but the money was never received. He then left with the phones in a white Citroen Berlingo van.

The incidents occurred in Torquay on 27 November 2025 and in Cranbrook on 19 December. Police have released an image of the man, hoping he can be identified and assist with the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Devon & Cornwall Police via their website or on 101, quoting reference 50250306097. Information can also be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
