FirstGroup’s proposed direct train service between Paignton and London has received fresh support from local MP Steve Darling.
The long-distance operator, Lumo, which launched in October 2021 and currently runs between London and Edinburgh, has applied for an open-access route linking Torbay with the capital. If approved, weekday services could increase from three direct trains to eight.
Under the plans, five return journeys would operate each weekday between Paignton and London Paddington, with stops at Torquay, Torre, Newton Abbot, Teignmouth, Exeter St David’s, Taunton, Bristol Temple Meads and Bath Spa. The first train from Paignton would reach London at 10.19am. FirstGroup says the route would provide Torbay with a “robust, regular direct service” and strengthen regional connections.
Speaking on the proposal, Mr Darling said: “I met with FirstGroup some months ago and pledged that I am happy to support them since clearly enhancing direct connections between Paignton and the capital can only be a positive development for our communities in the Bay.”
The application has been submitted to the Office of Rail and Road, with consultation and discussions with Network Rail expected to follow. Services could potentially begin in 2028.
