Emergency services attended and found that a fire was believed to have taken place at the property, although it had already gone out by the time they arrived.

An elderly man, aged in his 80s, was found inside the property and was confirmed dead at the scene, and his next of kin have been informed.

Detective Inspector Edward Vallins said officers are appealing for help from the public as enquiries continue.

“We would like to hear from anyone who has dashcam footage from Marsh Lane, Chudleigh, between 8pm on Wednesday 24 December and 11am on Thursday 25 December,” he said.

“The death is currently being treated as unexplained, and we are working closely with the fire service to establish the circumstances of this incident.

“There will continue to be a heightened police presence in the coming days as our enquiries are ongoing.”

Anyone who witnessed anything unusual in the area or has information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact police via the Devon and Cornwall Police website or by calling 101, quoting reference number 50250328761.

Information can also be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or visiting their website.
