Fireworks in Plymouth
Bonfire Night celebrations are underway in and around the English Riviera tonight, with spectacular fireworks displays and family-friendly events marking the annual tradition.
The festivities commemorate the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament.
Locals and visitors are being urged to plan ahead to catch the best displays.
Tonight (November 5), Watcombe Primary School in Torquay opens its gates at 5.30 pm, with fireworks set to light up the sky at 7.15 pm.
At Trago Mills, the Newton Sparkle event opens at 5pm, promising dazzling pyrotechnics for all the family.
Meanwhile, Ottery St Mary hosts the traditional Flaming Tar Barrels, a centuries-old local custom that is part of the Bonfire Night celebrations.
For those seeking more options later this week, Roselands Primary School in Paignton will hold its display on 7 November from 7 pm, while the RNLI Charity Fireworks in Exmouth open gates at 5.30 pm the same evening.
On 8 November, Brixham Town FC, Finlake, and the Dartington Estate all host fireworks and bonfire events from early evening.
Looking ahead, Brixham Breakwater will light up the sky on 22 November with the Lanterns, Lamps and ‘Luminations’ fireworks display.
Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night, has become a staple of British culture.
Traditionally held on 5 November, the evening involves bonfires, fireworks, and the burning of effigies of Guy Fawkes, serving as a reminder of the failed plot to assassinate King James I.
Over the centuries, it has evolved into a major celebration with family-friendly fireworks displays, food stalls, and community gatherings.
Visitors are encouraged to check event websites for tickets and start times, as many displays have early gate openings to accommodate families and ensure safety.
