Rope View sculpture overlooks sea at new South Devon Lidl site

Carved from white granite, Rope View by Bruce Williams marks the opening of Lidl’s new Paignton store and overlooks Berry Head and the harbour

Rope View sculpture overlooks sea at new South Devon Lidl site

Sculptor Bruce Williams got 'roped in to help mark the opening of the new Lidl store on the Ring Road at Paignton. And this is what he came up with.
He says: "Following a planning requirement I was commissioned by Lidl to create a sculpture especially for the front of the store.
"'Rope View' sits high on the hilltop above the town. The two giant seats of rope, carved in white granite, give you the chance to stop and look out to the sea, to Paignton harbour and the Berry Head nature reserve.

"Each bench weighs approximately two and a half tonnes. The work was commissioned by Lidl GB Ltd, prepared from digital originals, by Hardscape Ltd and installed with the local stonemason, Bruce Kirby of Acanthus Ltd.

Lidl were great to work with and if you are thinking of encouraging new artworks in the bay area."

Torbay mayor Barbara Lewis opened the store and said: "It’s a real pleasure to officially open this brand new Lidl store in Kings Ash. This is great news for Paignton — not just because we all love a good bargain, but because this store brings new jobs, more choice for local families, and a real boost to the community.

"Lidl has become famous for its great value, fresh produce, and of course, the mystery and magic of the middle aisle — where you never know whether you’ll walk out with dinner, a lawnmower, or a paddleboard.

"On behalf of Torbay Council, I want to thank Lidl for investing in our area and supporting local growth. And to all the staff here — thank you for your hard work getting everything ready."
