New programme helps Torbay's job seekers overcome barriers to employment

A new programme, Focus Forward, has been announced by Eat That Frog, a leading independent specialist provider of post-16 education and adult training services.

In collaboration with 'I Can Do That', this innovative programme aims to address the needs of individuals in Torquay aged 25 and over who are currently not in work or training. It provides them with tailored support to overcome barriers to employment and skills development.

Through the Focus Forward programme, Eat That Frog offer personalised 1:1 mentoring to help individuals identify their specific challenges and develop strategies to overcome them.

The free programme provides impartial guidance and support, empowering individuals to tackle issues such as skills gaps, confidence barriers, money worries, health and wellbeing and logistical challenges.

"Eat That Frog is committed to helping individuals in Torquay overcome barriers to employment and housing," said Hannah Rendle, Senior Partnerships Manager at Eat That Frog.

"The launch of Focus Forward, has enabled us to provide targeted support to those who need it most, helping them to unlock their potential and successfully move forward with their life."

Focus Forward has received £242,837 from the UK Government through Torbay’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund for the first year of delivery. The second year of delivery will be funded through Torquay Towns Deal and other internal Council budgets. This investment will enable the programme to reach a greater number of individuals and make a meaningful impact on the Torbay community.

Eat That Frog encourages all eligible individuals in Torbay to take advantage of the resources and support offered through the Focus Forward programme. By working together with 'I Can Do That', Eat That Frog is dedicated to helping local Torbay individuals to overcome barriers, secure employment, and achieve greater stability in their lives.

Through the programme, Eat That Frog is delighted to share the inspiring success story of Erinn, a determined individual who, with our support, has transformed her life and achieved her dream job with the NHS. Erinn joined Focus Forward in April, seeking support to gain employment but struggling with a lack of confidence in herself and her abilities. Despite not receiving any benefits, Erinn was motivated to make positive changes.
Building Erinn's confidence was crucial. She agreed to participate in one-on-one sessions and small group activities designed to improve her interpersonal skills, wellbeing, and employability. Additionally, Erinn attended digital learning courses to enhance her computer skills, which helped her construct a professional CV. The National Careers Service also played a pivotal role in identifying Erinn's strengths and providing guidance on suitable career paths. With newfound confidence, Erinn began job searching through one-on-one sessions, where she applied for various positions.
Erinn secured multiple interviews within a short period, and she accepted a promising role that offered potential for growth and was thrilled with the opportunity.
However, Erinn then received an invitation for a second interview with the NHS, her dream employer. With determination, she attended the interview and was offered the job. Erinn's enthusiasm and willingness to embrace every opportunity presented to her have been truly remarkable.
"We are incredibly proud of Erinn's achievements," said Mary Cassidy, Project Mentor at Eat That Frog. "Seeing her happiness and success is immensely rewarding for us. Her journey is a shining example of what can be accomplished with determination and the right support."
