Get ready to jump to the left and then step to the right... as Richard O'Brien's Rocky Horror Show rolls into town with Stephen Webb playing the iconic role of Dr Frank-N-Furter, writes DAWN GILLINGWATER.
The off-the-wall, fun musical, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary tour, is still packing in the crowds each night. Incredibly, the show has been seen by 30 million theatregoers and is still going strong.
It follows squeaky clean sweethearts Brad and Janet, who stumble across a creepy mansion. While inside they meet a whole host of madcap characters for a night of frolics and frivolity.
“It’s like no other musical you’ve ever seen,” said Stephen.
“There’s some cracking songs like the Time Warp and Sweet Transvestite, which everyone loves, but also it’s become quite current with it being gender fluid and celebrating diversity.”
Those familiar with the show know that the audience tend to dress up in a variety of costumes similar to that of their favourite characters from the show - many scantily clad and in full Rocky Horror attire.
“I’d say to anyone who hasn’t been before to come with an open mind,” said Stephen.
“It’s fun and sexy and I think it’s been running so long now that people know what they are gonna get when they come to see it.
“We call people who haven’t been to see it before Rocky Horror virgins. Afterwards they come to the stage door and say to me that they’ve never seen a show like it and come back again and again as they love it. The second time they dress up and know when to shout out as audiences don’t just watch, they are part of it, it’s immersive.”
Stephen has been playing the role of scandalous transvestite Frank for two years and has big shoes - or should be we say heels - to fill following in the footsteps of Tim Curry, who played the role in the hit film in 1975.
The likes of David Bedella and Oliver Thornton have also played the devilish role on stage in recent years - complete with fishnets, jewellery and full make-up!
“I spoke to the director and he said wanted me to do my own version of Frank,” said Stephen.
“I kind of approached it that my version of the character is a bit rough round the edges; like he’s taken his mother’s make-up and trying it out and my costume is not pristine. I do a few nods to Tim as you can’t not. I’m a bit hunkier and masculine and have a flavour of sass.”
He said when he took on the role, it took time to adjust and now loves every minute of it.
“The first time I ever put on the make-up, I didn’t see myself,” said Stephen.
“The make-up and costume really changes your persona and I became an alter ego for about six weeks.
“When I put on the heels and I stand there hardly wearing anything performing to 1,000 people, I can’t help but feel like a rock star. I come on stage in a cloak and whip it off and people cheer every night and I feel like Mick Jagger,” he said in jest.
Stephen who has enjoyed more than 20 years in the business and has appeared in the likes of The Wedding Singer, Jersey Boys and Titanic The Musical.
Along the way a few shows really stand out in his career.
“I did the first national tour of Jersey Boys and it was great to work with the Broadway company on that,” he said proudly.
“I was in the original production of Legally Blonde in the West End, so that's memorable for me. Rocky Horror also has to be one of my favourites as I keep coming back as it’s an honour to be part of it, especially the anniversary tour.
“Richard O’Brien has the last say on whether he likes you or not and I feel blessed to be involved.
“I just feel fortunate to still be here doing what I love, being on stage.”
Off stage you’ll find Stephen riding his bikes.
“My latest edition is a Harley Davidson. I like customising them and making them my own,” he said.
“On my day off it’s my therapy to go riding for a few hours. If the sun is out you’ll catch me on my bike.”
He’s had a busy time as of late as not only is he back on tour, he’s also got engaged to Danielle Steers, who is also in the business and is currently performing on tour in The Cher Show.
“We’re both performing on the touring circuit, it’s quite nice as we look forward to seeing each other when we do and are looking at planning a wedding,” said Stephen. “I’m in the Rocky Horror until next October so we’ll look at it then.”
As well as a wedding to plan, he’s also planning his return to the Bay as Frank.
“I like Torquay, I remember coming down in February 2019 for the show and loved being by the sea,” said Stephen fondly.
