Brixham MP Caroline Voaden at the Brixham Battery Heritage
Brixham MP Caroline Voaden was given an insight into part of the port's rich history with a visit to Brixham Battery Heritage Group.
The group, which runs the Battery Museum and cares for the WW2 buildings in Battery Gardens, were delighted to welcome Ms Voaden to their recent open day held at the Museum.
As this was a special open day, members of the Group were dressed in uniforms and outfits appropriate to the period when the battery was built in 1940 and operated by members of the Brixham Home Guard.
Ms Voaden was shown round the museum site and discussed the history of the battery and of its place in Brixham history with the first artillery battery recorded on the site in 1586 and further presence running through to 1944.
The group, in addition to opening the museum three afternoons a week, will be holding further special open days during the year which include guided tours to some of the buildings in Battery Gardens which are not usually open to the public.
Details of these special events can be found on the Group`s website at brixhambattery.org.
The Heritage Group which runs the museum is staffed by volunteers of which there is never enough so anyone interested in supporting the group would be welcome.
There are no special skills needed but an interest in the history of Brixham and its military associations, while certainly not a prerequisite, would be an advantage. Contact details can be found on the website.
