Community Matters: VE Day 80th Anniversary Celebrations and more…

Tracy VE Day

The Veterans Lunch Club put together an amazing VE Day celebration on 7th May, held at Central Conservative Club.

There were more than 45 people for lunch, all dressed up – most adorning red, white and blue attire, whilst others were in uniform or proudly showing medals – and another 100+ joined us for the afternoon celebrations! We had a few guests who are in their mid-90s and all have their own memories of that time in history, which was wonderful to hear about!

We had a delicious two-course lunch followed by the Winston Churchill speech Darkest Hour & the Victory Speech. Then Tom provided music and singing, with a few songs sung by the wonderful Singing for Fun group (song sheets provided to sing along with), and a special thank you to James, Pat, Joy & Usha for that entertainment.

Following a bit more music & singing by Tom, there was a quiz provided by Steve and later a raffle… so all in all, a truly enjoyable few hours commemorating a special day in history.

A special thank you to Anne Brooks, Amanda Lynn, Natasha Talbot & the Conservative Club for the organisation of such a wonderful event and the lovely food served up, and not forgetting the lovely cakes the Community Builders & friends supplied!

There are also some changes to let you know about

The Crafty Torre Group (which isn’t just for Torre residents, but they are held around Torre) will continue to be at the Noble Tree on the second Thursday every month between 3 and 5 pm and now the third Friday every month (3-5 pm) at The Skills Centre in Lime Avenue.

The TQ2 Social Group will now be meeting at the Central Conservative Club on Thursdays 5-7pm going forward (this is the regular Thursday social/games night we held at The Bull & Bush).

We still have the monthly Adventurers meal; for May we enjoyed a wonderful meal at Cinco Gatos, a friendly, tasty Mexican restaurant in Torre. The wonderful owners, Nikki & Ben, looked after us with a full menu as well as their wonderful specials! Please get in touch with Mervyn on 07748 661150 if you would like to join us at our next venue in June.

Do you have a spare hour a week or month? I am always in need of volunteers, whether that be helping to run groups, getting projects off the ground, or visiting/calling lonely and/or isolated people in their homes. If you have a spare hour a week or month, please do get in touch to talk more about getting involved.
