Hospital Radio: Fond farewell to beloved local Chairman

A word from Paul Harding & ex-Hospital Radio Chairman Lee Thomas as he passes the torch

Hospital Radio: Fond farewell to beloved local Chairman

Lee Thomas

As with all clubs and societies, including Torbay Hospital Radio, we look each year at the running of the organisation.

We have recently had our Annual General Meeting, and we now have a new chairman, Keith Reeves. He already commits a huge amount of time running our fundraising events and has also turned into a very useful handyman, having to turn his hand to just about everything.

AGMs can be rather dry events, but it was pleasing to see a good turnout from members and a willingness from those there to pitch in and help with the ongoing running of what is essentially a community station. Effectively finding willing volunteers can sometimes be a challenge, so there was a sense of real pride to see so many willing to step forward. Of course you can never have enough.

It is amazing the amount of ‘things’ there are to do in a small radio station, which despite its size requires high tech equipment to keep us on air, it is a continual balancing act and the work often goes unnoticed. Our previous Chairman, Lee Thomas, gives a snapshot below of his time as Chairman. I think it is fair to say he will be a difficult act to follow, especially when you consider all that has happened in the last five years or so.

Below is Lee’s summary of his time at the helm of Torbay Hospital Radio:

As Chairman of Torbay Hospital Radio, I am both proud and reflective as I prepare to hand over the reins of this cherished charity to a new leader. It has been an immense privilege to serve in this role, and I am filled with gratitude for the dedicated team of volunteers and supporters who have made our success possible.

Over the years, Torbay Hospital Radio has been a vital source of comfort, entertainment, and connection for patients, their families, and hospital staff. From live shows to special broadcasts, our aim has always been to lift spirits and bring a sense of normality to those undergoing treatment. It is truly heartwarming to hear how much these efforts mean to our listeners.

During my tenure, we have reached some significant milestones. Our FM broadcasts have been a major step forward, allowing us to reach a broader audience and strengthen our presence in the community. The merger with Newton Abbot Hospital Radio further expanded our capabilities, and now, with the recent merger of Life Care Radio, we are better equipped than ever to serve our audience. Managing the challenges brought by the Covid-19 pandemic was no small feat, but our resilient team ensured that our service continued uninterrupted. Additionally, we completed a comprehensive studio refit, bringing our facilities firmly into the 21st century and positioning us for a bright future.

Looking ahead, I believe this is the right time for a new chapter—a chance for fresh ideas and a renewed vision to carry the charity forward. Change brings opportunity, and I am excited to see how a new leader will build on the foundations we have laid to take Torbay Hospital Radio in a dynamic new direction.

Our charity has always thrived on community support, and I encourage everyone to continue backing the station. Whether it's volunteering, donating, or simply tuning in, every contribution helps us enhance the lives of those in hospital.

As I step down, my connection with Torbay Hospital Radio remains strong. I will continue to support its mission and watch with pride as it evolves. To the incoming chairperson, I offer my full support and best wishes for what I am sure will be an exciting journey.

Thank you once again to everyone who has been part of this incredible experience. Torbay Hospital Radio is more than a station—it's a community, and I am confident that its future is bright.

Stay tuned and stay connected!
