Kirkham House, Paignton’s medieval gem is open this summer. Built around the late 1300s, Kirkham House is one of the best-preserved medieval houses in the area.
In July and August, Kirkham House will be open every Sunday from 1pm to 4pm. Guided tours of the house by the Paignton Heritage Society are available and, providing there are sufficient volunteers, a visit to the Clink and the Bishops Tower is possible. Entry is free, donations are always appreciated.
Kirkham House is probably the oldest house remaining in Paignton. It is situated on Kirkham Street and comprises a Grand Hall, a Medieval Cross Passage, and a parlour/dining area on the ground floor. Upstairs there are three rooms which Paignton Heritage Society believe to be two bedrooms and a Solar, which is the room where the women of the house would spend much of their time. One of the bedrooms has the remains of an early “en suite”.
Outside are the remains of what is believed to be the kitchen. Not a huge amount is known about the early history of this enigmatic house but it is thought that it was a Church Building.
The Clink was Paignton's first prison and was used to house minor felons rather than serious criminals. It was last used in 1867 after an inmate committed suicide.
The Bible Tower is the last remaining part of the Bishop's Summer Palace and dates to the 14th Century.
As well as 1-4pm every Sunday, Kirkham will also be open on the August Bank Holiday Monday as well.
