A day to remember a special man
A day of remembrance and celebration has been planned for Jamie Doyle, a former Torbay serviceman who tragically died after leaving the military.

Jamie spent 22 years in the military and was a much-loved and well-respected sergeant in the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery. He tragically passed away in 2018, several months after leaving the military.

The event is open to all and will be held at Barton Cricket Club in Torquay on May 5, the day that Jamie would have celebrated his 50th birthday.

The event will feature two charity football matches, live music, stalls, wood-fired pizza, burgers and the Torquay Blood Bikes. For the youngsters, there will be face painting, arts and crafts, tombola, inflatables, ice creams and the Animal HQ Van from 2pm.

There will also be a raffle, jam-packed with lavish prizes, including hampers, massages, restaurant vouchers and two tickets to see Jamie’s team Liverpool play in Anfield next season.

The day will raise money for Veterans into Logistics, a charity set up in Jamie’s memory by his friend Darren Wright. The charity seeks to rehabilitate veterans into civilian society through meaningful employment and a strong support network. It does this through HGV training, leading many to a successful career in the logistics sector.

A spokesperson for Veterans into Logistics, said: "In 2018, our founder Darren Wright attended the funeral of close military friend Jamie Doyle who had served 22 years in The Royal Artillery.

"Walking away from Jamie’s funeral, Darren knew more needed to be done to support ex-military personnel who are struggling to adapt to civilian life.

"Having made the transition himself, Darren knew all too well how challenging it was – he too had struggled with the loss of the military network and structured military lifestyle.

"Veterans into Logistics was formed in 2020. We purchased our first HGV training vehicle, naming it in memory of Jamie Doyle, and enabling us to start our mission."

“We thought we could use the event to raise money for the charity,” said Hayley Doyle, Jamie’s cousin and one of the organisers of the event.

“We just as a family wanted to do something to remember Jamie as best we can. He was a really lovely person and would do anything to help anybody.

“He's a lovely person and a fantastic father. He was well loved by a big family and everybody misses him.”

She added: “It will be a great day, we’ve got a lot planned and it will be lovely for the whole family. We just want as many people to come on the day and celebrate Jamie’s life.”
