Bobby swaps Navy life for bricklaying - and is loving every minute of it

Bobby Wilson, an apprentice based in Paignton with Barratt David Wilson Homes Exeter, is helping the homebuilder celebrate this year’s National Apprenticeship Week as one of the business’s six trade trainees. 

Bobby’s apprenticeship blends on-site work at the Berry Acres development in Paignton with college education that focuses on Bricklaying Level 2 skills. Bobby, 23, joined the homebuilder after serving seven years in the Royal Navy, stationed in Plymouth. 

Despite enjoying his time in the navy, he wanted a better work-life balance closer to home and always harboured an ambition to learn a trade. This led him to pursue a bricklaying apprenticeship. 

This year’s National Apprenticeship Week, from February 5 to 12,  has a theme of “Skills For Life” which aims to show that apprenticeship programmes across the country are equipping those involved with the skills they need to progress within their careers. 

Bobby said: “I’ve always wanted a hands-on job that was rewarding, with no two days the same. The apprenticeship is great; you can qualify in a trade within 18 months, with on-demand support from the team guiding you throughout the programme.

“Transitioning from navy life to an apprenticeship brought unique challenges, but what I enjoy most about the apprenticeship is working with the team, who are all friendly and welcoming. As well as how varied the role is, from ground working to roofing, I’m always picking up new skills and techniques.”

Age, according to Bobby, is not a barrier in the apprenticeship journey. “Starting out, you just want to get your foot in the door, so the salary shouldn’t be a priority. You need to look closely at the progression paths that are likely to place you in a strong position in the future," says.

“The apprenticeship is definitely rewarding and comes with a lot of perks. I have learned so much and can’t wait to see where it takes me. The apprenticeship has really boosted my confidence and has taught me transferrable skills like problem solving, industry awareness and teamwork. I want to finish my Level 2 Bricklaying and hopefully continue working with Barratt Homes in the future through one of their subcontractors.”
