Torquay to host musical variety evening to help inspirational Ukraine activist

In a bid to support the ongoing humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, St Matthew's Church in Torquay is organising a Musical Variety Evening on Friday, February 9th, at 7 pm.

The main aim of the evening is to raise funds for a second-hand minibus that will aid a forthcoming trip to Ukraine led by Ruslan Zuiev, a former minister in the Salvation Army turned Military Chaplain.

Ruslan is involved in getting women and children out of war zones and into neighbouring countries. Often using his own money he has supported the Christian community in Bashtanka near Kherson, regions that have suffered from significant damage and loss of life. They urgently need transport for the disabled and the distribution of food and medicines.

In March 2023, Rick Taylor and Charlie Allansen flew to Lviv, Ukraine, delivering much-needed aid, including £25,000 worth of generators. Now, the call for support is renewed, this time with the goal of sending a minibus full of supplies.

Organisers of the Musical Variety Evening hope that the event will help to fund this mission, all while giving guests a night filled with incredible musical performances spanning various genres, from classical to jazz and contemporary music. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be Dean Winters.

Organiser Jonathan Abery, said: "Talented musicians will be showcasing their skills, playing a variety of genres that will surely get your toes tapping and your heart singing. Whether you're a fan of classical, jazz, or contemporary music, there will be something for everyone to enjoy."

During the evening there will be a raffle with the opportunity to win prizes including family tickets to Crealy Adventure Park, theatre tickets to the Babbacombe Theatre and meals in local hostelries.

Jonathan added: "By attending this event, you'll not only have a great time but also contribute to a worthy cause. All proceeds from this musical evening will go towards supporting Ukraine and its people. So, mark your calendars and join us for a night of music and solidarity."

Tickets are £10pp and include cheese and wine.

Tickets are available on the door and from Eventbrite: bit.ly/48ZvQUw  Therapia 0800 074 7319, Chelston Post Office, Ella’s Cafe, Marion McDonald on 07899 964846, Maggie Shelton at St Matthews Church and St John’s Church Shiphay.
