Torquay binman Mal Duggan has cleaned up in  the lottery stakes - and landed a life-changing £1million.

The Everton Football fan, 47, couldn't  believe how all his Christmases had come at once when he found out his ticket matched five main numbers plus the bonus ball in the National Lottery Lotto draw on Saturday, December 2.

And it was Dad who urged him to check his ticket and have a look.

Mal said: "My dad knew my numbers off by heart and he knew they were winning numbers.

“He didn’t want to say congratulations in case I had forgotten to play. He called me and just asked …. Mal did you play Lotto last night? – fortunately I had. At that point I hadn’t checked my numbers and my dad said you may just want to go online and check.

"I could not believe it when I did. My jaw just dropped and I just screamed OMG we are millionaires!”

Mal bought his ticket from the Co-op in Ilsham Road, Torquay.

He said looking after his family will be his first priority, together with buying the first home of his own with his girlfriend.

“We currently live above a shop with my girlfriend’s family which is obviously fine but all we have ever wanted is to own a home of our own – something which we never believed would be possible, " said Mal..

“The win is totally life-changing and it actually all still feels surreal – I keep thinking I am going to wake up from a dream and discover I have totally fantasised this whole once in a lifetime moment.

“Being able to look after those closest to me also means so much. Seeing the joy I can bring to loved ones is priceless.”

He has already made his first purchase – something he has always wanted – a PS5. And after offering to buy his girlfriend anything she wanted, she opted for a new pair of shoes.

Mal added: “We are just taking our time and letting the news sink in.

“Our very own dream home is definitely top of the list, together with a new car for my dad – and of course – our very best Christmas ever."

Mal, originally from Widnes, said: "The best seats at Everton for every home game will also be a must. Despite living in Torquay I still travel to as many games as possible – I absolutely love Everton and my favourite player is Seamus Coleman – I am of Irish descent so I have real admiration for Seamus.

Another bucket list wish that he will be able to tick off now he is a millionaire will be a trip on the Orient Express in the New Year.

The winning Lotto numbers on Saturday, December 2, 2023 were: 2, 4, 11, 23, 26, 33 and the bonus ball, 40. Mal matched: 2, 4, 11, 23, 26 and the Bonus Ball 40.
