Gary Johnson reflects on an important win
Torquay United manager Gary Johnson praised the composure and quality of his players after a controlled 3-1 victory over a physically powerful Weymouth side.
Brett McGavin opened the scoring with a fabulous early free-kick and he was also involved in the second, finished off by Brad Ash. The Terras pulled a goal back before the break but Lewis Collins sealed the win and Weymouth’s tough-tackling approach led to a late red card for the visitors.
“We knew it would be very competitive,” said Johnson. “You have to be clever, you have to be streetwise and you have to ride the tackles.
“When we went 2-0 up, we didn’t quite get our game going again quickly enough but we did score three quality goals, and it was our quality that won the game. I was really pleased with some of them, Calum Thomas came on for his debut and didn’t really put a foot wrong.
“Ethon Archer did really well, Theo [Williams] ran his heart out but the disappointment is the injuries. The third goal was so important because we played on Saturday, Weymouth didn’t, and the lads did tire at the end.
“I’m proud of the boys, it was a good atmosphere and no complaints about the whole night for Torquay United Football Club.
“It was a brilliant goal [from McGavin] and he’s got that in him. He does a lot of work as a deep-lying midfielder and his through-ball for the second goal was a fantastic pass that caused them a problem. He’s playing well and showing that he’s not just potential anymore.”
