Lionel Digby takes to the airwaves
Retro music fans and Torbay historians are in for a treat as Lionel Digby takes to the airwaves.
Torquay businessman Lionel has many fascinating strings to his lifetime bow.
He ran a costume hire shop in Market Street for decades, supplying costumes for film-makers and some of the most well-known acting superstars in the world.
He has also mixed with the rich and famous of the music industry, bringing household names to the concert stage in the Bay.
Lionel is also passionate about history and as a standard-bearer for the Royal British Legion, remembers those who have lost their lives in war and conflict.
He is being interviewed by South Devon Radio presenter Tony Srdinko on Saturday November 25 between 8am and 12 noon. Well-known local musician Drew Millin will be another guest.
Tony says: "It's all about the life and times of Lionel.
“He has brought all the big bands down to the bay from 1957 - The Who, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Rolling Stones, the Kinks, Pink Floyd, the Jam, Clash and many many more.
“We will be talking about all of this and more with guest like Drew, who was backing many of the bands in the 70/80s.
“We will be having live music from our studios in Lymington Road during the show from Drew and guests including Lee Carter guitarist with The Hunters in the 60s, an important member of Lionel’s stable of local bands from the early days.”
Torquay-born presenter Tony has lived in the Bay most of his life attended many of Lionel's gigs, including Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Curved Air, Hawkwind, Judas Priest, Police and many many more.
He has just joined South Devon Radio and says: “I think it will be great to have Lionel on South Devon Radio as we have now just gone onto DAB in the Torbay area.”
