Jon Langmead - Lotus Elise
Torbay racer enjoys special year
It has been a fantastic year of speed hillclimbing for Torbay Motor Club’s Jon Langmead.
This season, he has been competing in the 24 Round BHC Cup, which has taken him to courses all over the UK. The final event was held recently at Loton Park and Jon has finished top of his Class, A(i), in his Lotus Elise 135 R, and a magnificent 6th place overall. He was just 10 points behind the Champion, Johnathen Varley, in his GWR Raptor.
Jon from Kenton, started competing in South West hillclimb events in 2010 with a classic 1967 Lotus Elan S3. After 4 seasons with the Elan S3 learning all the courses in the SW, Jon purchased a Lotus Elise. With these two cars, Jon has held the Class A2 records at most of the SW hillclimb venues.
For the 2022 season Jon decided to enter the BHC Cup, a companion Championship to the British Hillclimb Championship. This series competes at all the UK courses except those in the Channel Isles and Ireland.
At most venues, Jon was making his debut. It was a memorable first season in a national championship. He finished equal top in Class A(i) on the same number of points as Robert Marwood in a Renault Clio 172. Both drivers achieved 104 points and had both scored extra points for four new records each. However, Robert shaded it and became Champion with his 9 wins to Jon’s 7.
With lessons learned and experienced gained in 2022, Jon was determined to make 2023 his year. Some modifications were made to the Elise over the winter. Jon put these to good use - his early season form was outstanding – the season opener at Prescott produced two first places. At the Gurston Down “double header” he achieved four first place finishes. During the course of that weekend, Jon broke the Class record four times! He then followed that up with another pair of wins at the historic Shelsley Walsh. This established Jon at the top of the Class, and well in control.
However, the second half of the season came with its issues – some were health related and others were of a mechanical nature. However, his early season form was enough to ensure that he was not going to lose the Class lead. In summary his stats for the season were 12 wins, including five new records.
