The Spanish option for students

The world is opening up even further for students at Torquay Girls’ Grammar, with the welcome addition of Spanish to their Modern Foreign Languages curriculum
For many years the students were taught French and German, however the Headteacher Ms Forster has introduced Spanish as a third language and recruited a specialist teacher to teach the students.
Ms Forster said: “I am absolutely delighted that we are in a position to be able to offer three modern foreign languages as part of our academic curriculum. I have listened carefully to student and parent feedback, alongside our vision and when I visited the lessons this week, the engagement and excitement in learning this curriculum confirmed that this was absolutely right.”
Spanish is now being taught to this year’s intake of Year 7, alongside the other MFL languages of French and German.
Head of Modern Foreign Languages, Ms Brown, said: “I am so pleased to have joined the Modern Languages Department here at Torquay Girls’ Grammar School and teaching the very first Spanish lesson at the school was a very proud moment for me.
“As well as introducing it to Year 7 as part of their curriculum offer, we will also be offering clubs to all year groups, so that other students can get involved in learning about the language and culture of Spanish speaking countries around the world. I also can’t wait to get the first curriculum trip to Spain up and running!”
Speaking in November, Nick Gibb Schools’ Minister, said: “Languages are a key part of a broad and balanced curriculum and evidence suggests learning a language has strong economic benefits, including improving international trade.
“The British Council’s Languages for the future also identified that Spanish, Mandarin, French, Arabic, and German are the top 5 priority languages to improve the UK’s skills, security and influence in the world. In an increasingly globalised economy, it has never been more important for our pupils to be taught modern foreign languages.”
The school has added A Level Spanish to its extensive offer of 24 A Levels, enabling linguistics to have choice over the language(s) they study in the Sixth Form.
