Schools respond to litter problem

Litter was the theme of the Rotary Environmental Poster Competition this year, organised by the Rotary Club of Tormohun (Torquay).

This annual event, now in its third year, is dedicated to promoting environmental stewardship among schoolchildren and this year received an amazing 297 entries. The competition centred on the topical issue of reducing litter, engaging students from years 7, 8 and 9 in Torbay Secondary schools to raise awareness and propose innovative solutions.

At a prize-giving ceremony and exhibition held at the Livermead House Hotel, Torquay, the acting President of Tormohun Rotary Club (Torquay), David Rowe, expressed gratitude to the teachers and students for their remarkable efforts and thanked the main sponsor Coastal Recycling.

The entries were met with high praise from the distinguished panel of judges. The students’ commitment, creativity and ideas showcased a deep understanding of the litter problem and demonstrated the potential for positive change.

The winners were:

Year 7 winner: Hattie Gamble from Torquay Academy; Year 8 winner: Aleesha Grote from Churston Ferrers Grammar School; and Year 9 winner: Ella Bramley Allen from Torquay Girls’ Grammar School.

Bumper day on the Quay

The Rotary Club of Brixham held their summer Town Fayre earlier this month at the Old Fish Market on the quay in Brixham.

Visitors enjoyed browsing among the numerous stalls selling a wide range of goods including jigsaws and toys, as well as enjoying a tombola, bric-a-brac and a Wheel of Fortune.

Brixham Rotary President, Adrian Laurie, said: “I would like to thank our members and other supporters who worked so hard on the day. The weather was very kind to us resulting in a heavy footfall and a large amount being raised for local charities.

“I would especially like to thank David Sharpe for organising this fantastic day and even ensuring that a collecting tin for the Rotary Polio Plus campaign was available to visitors to the fayre who wanted to contribute to this Rotary International initiative.”

Adrian added: “The Rotary Club of Brixham will continue its fund-raising events during the rest of 2023 culminating in our annual Santa visit in December, an event that is greatly appreciated by the people and children of Brixham and although many months away, companies who wish to advertise in our Santa flier are encouraged to get in touch now.” More details of the club and its events are available on the Club website www.brixhamrotary.org

Golf day hits the mark

Preston Rotary Club recently held a charity Golf Day at Torquay Golf Club.

Around 20 local businesses took part and some sponsored the event, alongside the main sponsor Denmans.

The winning team was CEF Torquay, pictured with organiser Steve Dark.

More than £2,000 was raised and this will go to Torbay Prostate Support Association and local Rotary charities.

President David Jamieson said: “We are pleased to support Torbay Prostate Support Association again and the funds will go to organising a free PSA blood testing event in November.”
