The driver of this wrecked van escaped with minor injuries after a spectacular crash on the main A380 into Newton Abbot today.

Newton Abbot Fire Station showed just how lucky he was with images on Facebook.

They said both appliances from Newton Abbot fire station, alongside a further appliance from Teignmouth, were mobilised to reports of a 'persons reported trapped' road traffic collision on the on the bridge above Hackney Marshes, between Ware Barton roundabout and the Penn Inn.

The ambulance service confirmed one person was still trapped in the flatbed van which had rolled over, causing damage to the cab, and ended up in between two crash barriers in the central reservation.

Fire crews set up an equipment pool and assessed the incident, deciding to support the vehicle using V-struts to prevent any unplanned movement of the van.

Crews managed the glass on the passenger door by breaking it in a controlled manner so the glass could be dealt with safely and not further injure the driver.

The crew then used battery-powered spreading equipment to spread the door away from the cab and remove it from the vehicle entirely. The driver was then able to be freed by the ambulance service.
Newton fire said: "The incident was dealt with swiftly, and the driver had been removed from the vehicle within a matter of minutes. All of the emergency services crews worked well together to rescue the individual, who thankfully only had minor injuries."
