SDAC at Erme Valley Relays
South Devon Athletic Club members are often reminded by their coaches that hills are their friends
Having trained on Thursday night with a brisk dash up past the masts at Marldon, they took on the ‘undulating’ Erme Valley Relays in pouring rain the following night.
Organised by Erme Valley Harriers, the races see teams of four tackling a two-and-a-half-mile course through the lanes around Ivybridge Rugby Club.
Seven SDAC runners took part, with the ‘Long In The Teeth’ team of Shaun Kirk, Marc Walpot, Guy Henderson and Colin Peters finishing 48th out of 89 teams in 72m 53s.
The SDAC ‘Ringers’ of Rob Foster, Rachel Irish, Minnie Dabinett and a second run from the tireless Rob Foster, finished 61st in 78m 31s.
The weekend also saw racers from South Devon AC travelling over the water into Cornwall for the hilly Magnificent Seven race in Saltash, which formed the latest round in the club’s season-long Grand Prix series.
Shaun Kirk was the first club racer home, finishing 80th overall in 55m21s. Dani Waters was next, with her time of 57m 08s giving her third place in the female over-35 category.
Other SDAC finishers were Jeremy Goddard in 59m 36s, Antony Waters in 1h 04m 14s and Cherry Powell in 1h 09m 53s.
