Ten South Devon AC runners headed for the village of Umborne on Saturday evening for a hot and hilly race in the East Devon countryside.
The Umborne Ug is a scenic multi-terrain 10k which starts and finishes outside the village hall. The route takes in parts of the Widworthy Estate and includes some tricky off-road sections along with a lot of tough climbing.
The race was the latest round in the club’s annual Grand Prix series, and Kevin Ashworth was the first of the SDAC runners back at the finish for the fourth time in four outings this season.
Ashworth’s clean sweep run gave him 21st position overall in a time of 51m 25s.
Wife Laura Ashworth made it a good night for the household, finishing as the first SDAC female home in 1h 12m 22s.
The other SDAC finishers were Robert Foster in 54m 59s; Shaun Kirk in 57m 21s; George Holman in 1h 03m 49s; James Nash in 1h 07m 48s; Mark Holman in 1h 14m 57s; Roger Webb in 1h 24m 48s; Alison Ford in 1h 32m 00s and David Cubberley in 1h 40m 23s.
Dani Waters was the only SDAC member to brave the hills and the heat of the Giants Head Marathon at Sydling St Nicholas in Dorset.
The ‘undulating’ course took runners through the Sydling and Cerne valleys, and around and under the famous Cerne Giant chalk figure etched into the hillside.
Dani completed the course 68th overall in a time of 4h 48m 25s.
