Commuters at Exeter Central are being greeted by a burst of seasonal colour following a community-led makeover of the station's platforms.

A team of young adult learners from Exeter College has officially "adopted" the city centre hub, installing a series of new planters filled with perennials and spring bulbs.

The project was completed with the help of TV gardening expert Toby Buckland and Great Western Railway (GWR).

The initiative was led by the college’s Community Gateway learners; adults aged 19 to 24 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The course is designed to help students build independence and gain vital life and work skills.

Working alongside Mr Buckland in November 2025, six students learned how to prepare the soil and properly plant a variety of greenery, including daffodils and dwarf daffodils.

One of the learners involved said the experience was "challenging but fun."

"Planting with Toby was great because he taught us how to prepare the planters," they said. "It is nice to be helped by people who know things. It feels good to help the community."

The project marks the beginning of a long-term partnership. By formally adopting the station under GWR’s Station Adoption programme, the students will be responsible for the ongoing upkeep and seasonal replanting of the site.

Sharon Sanderson, Programme Leader at Exeter College, said the experience had been "brilliant" for the students’ confidence.

"Our learners had a fantastic time bringing life to Exeter Central, and it’s wonderful to see the flowers blooming. It’s been a really rewarding experience, and they’re already looking forward to returning for the next stage."

GWR’s Station Adoption scheme encourages local groups to take ownership of their rail stops through gardening, maintenance, and art displays.

Melanie Harvey, GWR’s Station Manager for Exeter Central, said the partnership "brightens journeys" for the thousands of passengers who use the station daily.

"Seeing Exeter Central in bloom is fantastic and a real testament to what can be achieved through partnerships," she said. "We’re incredibly proud of Exeter College’s learners for their dedication."

The Community Gateway course continues to support students through volunteering and work experience, aiming to bridge the gap between education and independent living.
