A Plymouth rugby club hosted a special event this week as the Women’s Rugby World Cup trophy visited the city as part of a national tour.
Plymstock Oaks RFC welcomed 85 girls from Plymouth and surrounding areas on Monday (30 March) for a non-contact rugby session aimed at encouraging participation and celebrating the growth of the women’s game.

Players of all ages and experience levels took part in a series of skills sessions, games and activities led by the club’s coaching team, with a focus on teamwork and enjoyment.
The visit of the Women’s Rugby World Cup trophy gave those attending the opportunity to see the sport’s top prize up close, adding to the occasion and providing a memorable experience for many of the young players.
Conor Thomson, head girls coach at Plymstock Oaks RFC, said the event was focused on inspiring the next generation.
“This event was all about inspiring the next generation,” he said. “Seeing so many girls enjoying themselves and embracing the sport is exactly what community rugby is about.
“We’re incredibly proud to have hosted the trophy and to support the growth of girls’ rugby in our area.”
The event formed part of the Community Rugby Trophy Tour, delivered by England Rugby to promote the women’s game at grassroots level.
Rebecca Smith, MP for South West Devon, attended the session and highlighted the club’s recent progress in developing opportunities for girls.

She said there had previously been no provision for girls to continue playing beyond under-11 level, but new teams have been established this season.
“At the start of the season there were just two girls but now there are over 30,” she said.
Volunteers from the club helped run the evening, supporting the sessions and ensuring the event ran smoothly.
Plymstock Oaks RFC said it is continuing to expand its girls’ rugby programme as interest in the sport grows locally.
