Organisers of the Devon County Show have unveiled a suite of new livestock competitions for 2026, aimed at bridging the gap between commercial excellence and "light-hearted" rural tradition.
The three-day event, held at Westpoint, Exeter, remains one of the South West's flagship agricultural showcases. This year's expansion signals a dual focus: securing the future of British farming through youth engagement and celebrating the unique character of continental and native breeds.
The 2026 programme introduces dedicated classes for two distinct breeds that have seen a surge in regional popularity:
Bleu du Maine Sheep: Recognisable by their blue-tinged faces, these continental sheep are being given their own platform for the first time, highlighting their growing commercial value in the UK market.
Belted Galloway Cattle: The iconic "Belties" will now compete in their own dedicated classes. Known for their hardiness and distinctive white markings, they are a staple of low-input beef systems.
A key addition to the show ring is the Dexter Young Handlers competition. By focusing on the smallest of the native cattle breeds, famed for their docile nature, the show aims to provide a manageable entry point for children and teenagers to develop professional stockmanship skills.
Show officials say the move is a "cornerstone" of their commitment to supporting the next generation of the farming community.
It isn’t all serious business in the pens, however. The 256th year of the show will also feature:
Sheep Fancy Dress: A new fixture designed to attract families and showcase the more imaginative side of rural life.
Best Presented Sheep Pen Awards: A new prize for exhibitors who maintain the most informative and professional displays for the public.
"These additions reflect the Show’s commitment to supporting British livestock, encouraging the next generation, and celebrating the character and creativity of the farming community," a spokesperson for the event said.
