Performers from Richard Chappell Dance bring Us Folk to the South West this summer
A Devon-based dance company is set to return to the South West this summer with a production that promises to "reclaim the spirit of togetherness" through a blend of contemporary movement and folk tradition.
Richard Chappell Dance will premiere its latest work, Us Folk, at the Sterts Arts & Environmental Centre in Cornwall before heading to the Exeter Northcott on Tuesday, 16 June.
The production follows the company's most successful spring tour to date, which included a sold-out run at the Theatre Royal Plymouth.
Described as a "joyful and compassionate celebration," the performance explores how folk culture can address modern-day challenges.
Artistic Director Richard Chappell said he was "excited" to bring the work to audiences in Devon and Cornwall, where folk traditions remain a "vital part of cultural life."
"By weaving together contemporary dance with modern folk and writing practices, we’ve shaped a rich tapestry of art forms that reimagine what communities can be today," Mr Chappell added.
The production features a diverse line-up of performers, including:
Dancers: Marla King, Sam Gilowitz, and Maya Carroll.
Musicians: Acclaimed folk artists and ceilidh callers Ben Moss and Maz McNamara.
Poetry: Spoken word by award-winning poet Saili Katebe.
The performance is set to a score by electronic duo Larch, which includes samples of the world-renowned Treorchy Male Voice Choir.
Organisers say the work aims to celebrate the power of social dancing to reconnect people with each other and the natural world.
Further details regarding community "wrap-around" activities linked to the tour are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
