Crucial three points for Bideford AFC
Farren Simons struck deep into stoppage time to hand Bideford a dramatic 3-2 victory over fellow strugglers Bashley on Saturday, in a result that could prove crucial in the battle to avoid relegation.
The Robins looked to be cruising after building a two-goal lead, only to be pegged back by a spirited Bashley fightback. However, Simons’ late intervention ensured all three points headed back with Bideford, keeping them just outside the relegation zone despite unfavourable results elsewhere.
Bashley made a bright start and nearly took an early lead within the opening 10 minutes. Scott Bungay broke through on goal but fired into the side netting, before Joshua Hall’s volley was deflected onto the post following Jack Flower’s punch clear from a free kick.
Bideford gradually worked their way into the contest, with Ryan Turner seeing both a shot blocked and a header saved by Oscar Glover, while Finn Roberts drove narrowly over from an angle.
Flower was called into action at the other end, producing an excellent double save to deny Jack Lovell after impressive work down the right by Harvey-Joe Bertrand. Turner continued to threaten, but another header was comfortably gathered by Glover.
The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute and fittingly fell to Turner on his 250th appearance for the club. Roberts launched a long throw into the box, and Turner met it perfectly to power a header past Glover at the near post.
Glover was kept busy, making a smart low save from Roberts before comfortably dealing with Javan Wright’s deflected effort. Both goalkeepers were then in fine form before the break, with Flower tipping Bungay’s effort over the bar and Glover denying Jamie Hearsey with a well-struck shot.
The second half continued in a similar vein, with Glover producing a superb save to keep out Hearsey’s volley, while Jack Winsor fired narrowly wide from distance.
Bashley thought they had equalised on the hour mark when substitute Joe Freak struck, only for Flower to produce a brilliant save, tipping the effort onto the post.
That moment proved pivotal, as Bideford doubled their advantage just three minutes later. Hearsey played in Javan Wright, who showed composure to round Glover and finish from a tight angle.
Bashley responded almost immediately, however, with Freak racing through to pull one back with a neat finish at the near post. Buoyed by the goal, the hosts piled on the pressure and found an equaliser in the 79th minute, as Freak struck again from close range after the ball fell kindly inside the box.
With momentum against them, Bideford showed resilience in the closing stages. Roberts picked out Simons with a superb pass in the 87th minute, but Glover produced a crucial save to deny him.
Simons would not be denied for long. In the 90th minute, a swift counter-attack saw Wright release him on the far side, and this time he made no mistake, drilling a low shot past Glover to seal a vital victory for the visitors.
The late winner sparked jubilant scenes among the Bideford players, as they secured a hard-fought win that could prove decisive in their fight for survival.
