Apprenticeships a ‘fantastic opportunity’, Torridge Council says

As a key employer in the local area, at Torridge District Council we are dedicated to nurturing local talent.

One of our strategic goals is to create an environment that fosters the development of highly skilled and well-paid jobs, providing opportunities for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to acquire transferable skills in the workplace, which can enhance their lives.

That’s why, each year, we believe it is important to support National Apprenticeship Week, which runs from February 9 to 15, to raise awareness and to celebrate the achievements of apprentices around the country and their positive impact on communities, businesses, and the wider economy.

I strongly believe that apprenticeships provide a fantastic opportunity for individuals to build essential workplace skills while gaining valuable qualifications.

There’s a misperception that apprenticeships are just for school leavers and young people, when actually apprenticeships are open to people of all ages, 16 and over, including college or university graduates, adults changing careers or returning to work after a break, and also people already in work who want to upskill or add a new qualification.

At Torridge District Council we currently have seven apprentices, five studying at degree level and two studying at level 3, across a wide range of departments.

Opportunities to develop and progress are actively encouraged with a full programme of support and development organised and monitored through the senior and operational management teams leading to professional qualifications and, in some instances, opportunities to apply for full-time job vacancies.

In the spirit of celebrating and nurturing young talent, I was delighted to hear that George Hudson aged eight, was recently invited to Torridge District Council’s new operational services centre after winning a competition to design a new banner for one of the council’s latest refuse vehicles.

During his visit, he saw his design proudly displayed on the new truck and was presented with a prize to thank him for his contribution.

It’s fantastic to see young people engaging so positively with recycling.

The newly branded vehicle can now be seen on rounds in the district, so keep an eye out for George’s design when our teams are out collecting your waste!
