Yellow Warning Weather Map for Exeter - Credit: Met Office
Exeter faces several days of potentially disruptive weather this weekend as the Met Office has issued yellow rain and wind warnings for the city from Friday 23 January through Sunday 25 January.
Storm Ingrid, named by the Portuguese weather service IPMA, is expected to bring periods of heavy rain, strong gusts, and coastal gales to the region.
Residents should prepare for travel delays, short-term power outages, and localized flooding.
Some bus and train services are likely to be affected, and journeys may take longer than usual.
Coastal roads, sea fronts, and nearby communities may experience spray or large waves, with a few homes and businesses at risk of flooding.
Heavy rain is expected to fall in two main periods on Friday. Early morning showers could bring 10-20mm of rain over already saturated ground, followed by a drier spell.

Further bands of locally heavy rain and showers will move northwards through the afternoon, evening, and overnight, with 15-20mm widely forecast and up to 30-40mm possible in some areas. Combined with saturated soil, this increases the risk of flooding on roads and in low-lying areas.
Strong winds will accompany the rain, with gusts inland of 45-50mph and coastal gusts of up to 60mph.
Winds are expected to peak on Friday evening before easing overnight and into Saturday morning.
Very large waves may affect coastal areas, so residents near the shore should exercise caution.
Stephen Dixon, a spokesperson from the Met Office, commented: “There’s currently a rain and wind warning that covers Exeter that will be in force through to 9am on Saturday. 30–40mm of rain could accumulate over Dartmoor, with 15–20mm more likely in the Exeter area."
"This is falling on fairly wet ground already, which increases the chances of impacts. Accompanying the rain is some gusty winds, with 60mph possible near coasts and 45–50mph more likely inland. Travel disruption is likely and it’s worth people checking their route is clear before heading out."
"Power cuts are also possible, so it could be worth collecting torches and batteries, as well as other essential items to make sure you’re as prepared as you can be."
"Saturday will see further rain for Exeter, with the possibility of further warnings being issued; so it’s worth staying up to date with the latest forecast. Sunday will continue the unsettled theme, though turning drier later in the day.”
If travelling, check road and rail conditions, adjust travel plans, and allow extra time for journeys.
Coastal visitors should stay alert to large waves, avoid cliff edges, keep dogs on leads, and call 999 for the Coastguard in an emergency.
Residents are also advised to monitor the weather closely, as conditions and warnings can change quickly.
The yellow warning indicates a high likelihood of these weather events with a low potential impact, but the combination of heavy rain and strong winds means residents should remain cautious and plan ahead.
