A yellow weather warning for rain is in force for Exeter today, Thursday 15 January, as heavy downpours falling on already saturated ground raise the risk of surface water flooding and travel disruption across the city.

The Met Office says outbreaks of rain will spread northeastwards through the day, becoming persistent and heavy at times before clearing later this evening and overnight.

Rainfall totals of 20 to 30 millimetres are expected fairly widely, with some areas seeing that amount fall in just a few hours. In a few isolated spots, totals of up to 40 to 50 millimetres are possible, increasing the likelihood of localised flooding.

With ground conditions already very wet, the warning highlights the potential for flooding of a small number of homes and businesses, as well as difficult conditions on roads.

Spray and standing water are expected to make journey times longer, while bus and train services could also be affected, with delays possible throughout the day.

Rain will be accompanied by strengthening winds during the afternoon and evening, particularly across southern areas.

Gusts of up to around 50 miles per hour are possible along some exposed coasts, adding to the potential for disruption.

A Met Office spokesperson said a “yellow weather warning for rain is currently in force for parts of the South West, including the Exeter area, reflecting the potential for periods of heavy and persistent rain falling onto saturated ground.”

The Met Office said this could lead to surface water flooding, difficult travel conditions and possible disruption to transport services.

The warning has a medium likelihood of impacts but a low overall impact rating.

Residents are being advised to remain alert to changing conditions, especially as weather warnings can be updated quickly.

The Met Office recommends checking whether properties may be at risk of flooding, planning journeys carefully and allowing extra time for travel.

People are also encouraged to prepare for the possibility of power cuts by ensuring torches, batteries and mobile phone power packs are readily available.

The warning area was expanded overnight to cover more of the South West, with forecast information updated to include the risk of strengthening winds.

While severe impacts are not expected for most people, forecasters say today’s weather could still cause disruption in places, particularly during periods of heavier rain, and Exeter residents are urged to take sensible precautions and stay up to date with the latest forecast.
