Passengers using Exeter St Davids railway station are being warned that all lifts between platforms will be out of service while a major refurbishment project takes place.

Network Rail has confirmed that all three passenger lifts at the busy Exeter station will be replaced from Monday 5 January, with work expected to continue until the spring.

During this period, lifts will not be available between platforms.

The work forms part of a wider investment to improve accessibility and reliability at the station, which serves as a key transport hub for Exeter and the wider South West, handling thousands of passengers each day.

Passengers who are unable to use the stairs between platforms will still be able to travel, with station staff on hand to help people use an alternative step-free route.

Network Rail and Great Western Railway (GWR) say additional staff will be deployed throughout the works to support customers, including those travelling with bikes, prams or heavy luggage.

A temporary assisted travel lounge will be set up on Platform 1 for the duration of the project, providing a dedicated space for passengers who require extra help with their journeys.

However, customers who normally change trains at Exeter St Davids are being encouraged to consider alternative stations if they are unable to manage the stairs during the refurbishment period.

Alex Bennett, Network Rail project manager, said the upgrade would bring long-term benefits for passengers.

“Upgrading the lifts at the station will give passengers with limited mobility or those with prams, bikes or heavy luggage the confidence that they can conveniently use Exeter St Davids station,” he said.

“We’re sorry for the disruption, but I’d like to assure passengers that step-free access to all platforms will still be available throughout the work and extra staff will be on hand to help.”

Debbie Ferris, GWR Station Manager for Exeter St Davids, said the work was necessary to ensure the lifts remain reliable for years to come.

“We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause but this investment will ensure the robust and long-term operation of the customer lifts,” she said.

“Those customers unable to use the stairs will be helped by staff to use a safe alternative route between platforms instead.

“In addition, an assisted travel lounge will be provided to support those who require assistance for the duration of these lift renewal works.”

Adding to this, she said: “Our priority throughout is ensuring every customer can travel safely, comfortably, and with confidence.”

Passengers are advised to plan ahead and speak to station staff if they need assistance while the work is underway.
